The court of justice in Arnhem has acquitted Lucia de Berk after a re-run of her trial. This verdict marks the end of a long period of uncertainty for Mrs. De Berk herself and her family, the relatives of the deceased patients and all during this time directly involved employees of the hospital. We wish them all the strength they need. An internal investigation by the Juliana Children's Hospital / Red Cross Hospital - which fused with the Leyenburg Hospital in 2004 to form Haga Hospital - was the motivation in September 2001 to file charges with the attorney general who next, after their own research, proceeded to prosecute Mrs. De Berk. Haga Hospital is responsible for good patient care in a safe climate. Every doubt about this safety should immediately lead to an internal investigation, no matter who is involved. Depending on the results, there can be reason to file suspicions and results of the investigation with the proper authorities. Haga Hospital cooperated with the investigation at all times, which has ultimately led to the acquittal of Mrs. De Berk by the court.
