Your opponent is intelligent. He will try his best to defeat you, and to avoid being defeated himself. Don't count on him doing something dumb, because he won't.
Recognize and avoid situations where you don't gain anything, but that give your opponent a chance to hit you. If those situations lead to your loss, what kind of situation might lead to winning?
