The Mathematical Institute Newsletter is maintained by Jan-Hendrik Evertse. In general, the newsletter is issued the first week of each month, except for July and August. The electronic version of the newsletter can be found on
(go to the homepage of the Mathematical Institute and click on "Newsletter").

Agenda and announcements

  • PR initiative for mathematics

Recently, the board of the Faculty of Sciences has designated biology and mathematics as spearheads in a new initiative to enlist more bachelor students. A think tank, consisting of Gert Jan van Helden (director of the faculty), Johan Detollenaere (PR collaborator of the faculty), Sjoerd Verduyn Lunel, Sander Hille (chairman of the public relations committee for mathematics) and Fred Bakker is presently working out a new concept for mathematics. As a means of support, the team of student ambassadors, presently consisting of Erik van Werkhoven en Erik Jongsma has been extended per November 1 by Gonnie Hauwert and Pieter Rogaar.

  • Mutation in 'Raad van Toezicht'

The 'Raad van Toezicht' (Advisory council) advises the (board of the) Mathematical Institute. Recently, Prof.dr. H.A.van der Vorst has been appointed as successor of Prof.dr. M.A. Kaashoek. The 'Raad van Toezicht' presently consists of Ir. B. van Nederveen (chair), dr. M. Elkenbracht-Huizing, prof.dr. G. Nienhuis, prof dr. H.A. van der Vorst and prof.dr. W.R. van Zwet.
  • General Colloquium lectures on Thursdays November 3,10 and December 8,15

November 3: Prof. Frank den Hollander (UL): The incipient infinite cluster for oriented percolation.
November 10: Prof. Jaap Korevaar (UvA): Tauberian Theory: History and Highlights.
December 8: Dr. Patsy Haccou (UL, Institute of Biology): Effects of deleterious mutations on the evolution of reproductive modes.
December 15:Prof. Philippe Clément (TUD/UL): Maximal regularity for differential equations in Banach spaces and R-boundedness.

All lectures are from 16:00-17:00 in room 174 of the Snellius. The lectures are preceded by coffee and tea at 15:45 in room 174. See for further information.

  • Workshop "Dynamics of Patterns" at Lorentz Center from November 7-11
