The Mathematical Institute Newsletter is maintained by Jan-Hendrik Evertse. The newsletter is issued the first week of each month, except for July and August. The electronic version of the newsletter can be found on

Copy for the April newsletter, such as announcements, personal notes, visits to conferences, guests (with place of origin and date of arrival and departure), lectures of general interest, Ph.D. thesis defenses (with title of thesis), etc. should be sent by e-mail to evertse at before March 27. Copy should be submitted in English plaintext, so that it can be inserted into the newsletter without time consuming typing or translating work.

Agenda and announcements

  • Opening Snellius on Wednesday March 3
    As has already been announced, our building will be named "Snellius," after the Dutch mathematician/physicist Willebrord Snell (1580-1626; professor at Leiden from 1613). A biography of Snell(ius) can be found on the MacTutor History of Mathematics website, see
    On occasion of the new naming of our building (as well as its redecoration), there will be an opening celebration on Wednesday March 3 on 4:00 pm in the canteen. The program (in Dutch) consists of some opening words by P.J.J. van Daalen (director of the I-group), a lecture on Snellius by Prof. Gerrit van Dijk (scientific director of MI/LIACS) and the opening by Mr. A.W. Kist (chairman of the University Board).

Visits/lectures outside our institute

- G. van Dijk: From March 13-20 he will visit the annual congress in Mahdia of the Tunesian Mathematical Society. He will give an invited lecture.
- P. Stevenhagen: On March 18 he will give a lecture at the Centre Pompidou (Beaubourg, Paris) in the frame of a mathematical day, "La face cachée des mathémathiques." For further information see the poster.
