The Mathematical Institute Newsletter is maintained
by Jan-Hendrik Evertse.
The newsletter is issued the first week of each
month, except for July and August.
The electronic version of the newsletter can be found on
(go to the homepage of the Mathematical Institute and click on "Newsletter").
Copy for the March newsletter, such as announcements, personal
notes, visits to conferences, guests (with
place of origin and date of arrival and departure),
lectures of general
interest, Ph.D. thesis defenses (with title of thesis), etc.
should be sent by e-mail to
evertse at math.leidenuniv.nl
before February 27.
Copy should be submitted in English plaintext,
so that it can be inserted into the newsletter
without time consuming typing or translating work.
Agenda and announcements

"Hello everybody, I was asked to write a short piece to introduce myself
as a new worker at the Mathematical Institute. My name is Sierk Rosema,
it originates from the northern province Friesland, where my great
grandfather came from. I grew up here in Leiden, where I was born in
1978. After my education at the Stedelijk Gymnasium I decided it was
time to see another city, so I chose a study of mathematics at Utrecht
University, which I finished this summer. After having worked for the
local McDonald's (on the other side of the highway that runs next to the
institute) for a few months, I acquired an AIO position here, where my
promotor is Prof. R.Tijdeman. My research area will have to do with
number theory, combinations on words and (substitutions in) dynamical
systems. I'm currently working on a distribution problem in finite sets,
also known as the chairman assignment problem, where a union of states
has to select a chairman every year in such a way that at any time the
accumulated number of chairmen from each state is proportional to its
weight. So far I'm enjoying working here and looking forward to the rest
of my four years.
New employees (Postdocs):
