The newsletter is issued the first week of each
month, except for July and August.

Copy for the February newsletter, such as announcements, personal
notes, visits to conferences, guests (with date of arrival and departure),

before January 27.
Copy should be submitted in English plaintext,
so that it can be inserted into the newsletter
without time consuming typing or translating work.

New Year's coffee on Monday January 5
The board of the LION (Institute for Physics) cordially invites
all personnel of the Mathematical Institute and the
LIACS for a New Year's coffee
on Monday January 5 at 10:00 am in the central hall of the
Huygens Laboratory.

New Year's reception on Monday January 5
On January 5 from 4:00-6:00 pm there will be a New Year's reception
in the hall of the Gorlaeus laboratories.
During this reception,
there will be a presentation of the C.J. Kok prizes for the
'discoverer of the year 2003'. The institute directors of the
Faculty of Sciences have nominated eight candidates for the
C.J. Kok prizes. You may cast your vote on any of these candidates
before January 5 at 12:00 on the website

Inaugural lecture by Prof. Bas Edixhoven on Friday January 9
Prof. Bas Edixhoven will give his 'Oratio' on Friday January 9
at 4:00 pm in the 'Groot Auditorium' of the Academy building
at the Rapenburg.

Kloosterman Lecture by Prof. Noriko Yui on Thursday February 5
Prof. Noriko Yui (Queen's University, Kingston, Canada)
has been appointed as the 2003(!) Kloosterman
Professor.
She will visit our institute from January 15-March 15.
On February 5 she will deliver her Kloosterman lecture.

- Prof. Noriko Yui (Queen's University, Kingston, Canada) is the Kloosterman Professor

From January 13 - 15,
the 29th Conference on the Mathematics of
Operations Research will be held in Lunteren, including a Seminar on
On-line Methods. Both the Conference and the Seminar are organized by
Lodewijk Kallenberg.
