Copy for the November newsletter, such as announcements, personal notes, visits to conferences, guests, lectures of general interest, Ph.D.-defenses, etc. should be sent by e-mail to evertse@math.leidenuniv.nl before October 27. Copy should be submitted in English plaintext, so that it can be inserted into the newsletter without time consuming typing or translating work.

  • General Colloquium on Thursday October 9
     
    Dr. D. Pik (Universiteit Leiden): Minimal representations of a contractive operator as a product of two bounded linear operators.

  • Stieltjes afternoon on Thursday October 16 at EURANDOM
     
    The Stieltjes afternoon of 2003 is organized at EURANDOM in Eindhoven. There will be lectures by Prof. G. Slade (University of British Columbia) and Prof. B. Nienhuis (Universiteit van Amsterdam). Further, there will be a presentation of the Stieltjes Prize for the best Ph.D. thesis at the Stieltjes institute in 2003, and a lecture by the Stieltjes Prize winner. Working visits/visits to conferences

- Sara van de Geer: on October 15, she will give a lecture at ECARES, Brussel, on L1 regularization.
- Jelle Goeman: on October 16 he will give a lecture at Kaunas (Lithuania) on Qualitative Comparative Analysis.
- Peter Stevenhagen: from October 20-24 he will participate into a workshop on computational number theory in Debrecen (Hungary) en from October 28-30 he will visit the TU Darmstadt. On November 20 he will give a 'Basic Notions in Mathematics'-talk in the Mathematics colloquium in Utrecht, titled: Algebraic Numbers.
- Jan-Hendrik Evertse and Rob Tijdeman: from 5 to 11 October they will participate into a conference in Vienna, Austria, on the occasion of the 70th birthday of W.M. Schmidt, and from 19 to 25 October into a workshop in Debrecen, Hungary on computational number theory.
