the first week of each month,
except for July and August.

so that it can be inserted into the newsletter without
time consuming typing or translating work.

Farewell reception for Chris Zaal on January 17
Chris Zaal has been working for our institute since 1999.
He was responsible for all activities concerning public relations
and the propagation
of mathematics. Further he was employed by the Wiskundig Genootschap
(Pythagoras, Nieuw Archief).
On January 1, 2003 he leaves our institute, to take a new position
at the Freudenthal Institute of the University of Utrecht.
On occasion of his departure, the Mathematical Institute
will offer him a reception.

"I am working as assistant professor in the group of Sjoerd Verduyn Lunel
since January 1, 2003. Leiden is my home university: I studied here and
obtained my PhD under supervision of Gerrit van Dijk and Eric Opdam. My
research has a functional analytic angle and covers topics in
representation theory, special functions, approximation theory and
probability theory. Previously I have been affiliated with M.I.T., Paris
VII, the Ministry of Transport and Water Management and the University of
Amsterdam.
