The first two meetings this semester are largely devoted to
zeta functions in order to prepare for the meeting on Sep 17.
In four lectures Daqing Wan will
give a reasonably self-contained introduction to the proof of Dwork's
conjecture, at the level of "linear algebra and
calculus" over "p-adic power series rings".
The general theme of these lectures is geometric and arithmetic variation of
zeta functions over finite fields.
René Schoof, Bart de Smit and Hendrik Lenstra will give
three lectures to review basic properties and examples of
zeta functions in an arithmetic setting.

Diangle groups and their deformations
Abstract:
Triangle groups are a well known object in the theory of
Riemann surfaces. This talk is about the fact that "diangle groups"
exist in the theory of non-archimedean uniformization of curves in
positive characteristic, how to classify them and use them
to determine automorphism groups of Mumford curves (analogue of
Hurwitz's bound) and equivariant deformation spaces of such curves.
